Bringing Legacy and New Stained-Glass Beauty to our Renovated Sanctuary – Part 3
Today we look at the four stained-glass windows that will be grouped together on the left wall of our renovated sanctuary, towards the front. This will include one memorial window from the former Knox-Metropolitan United Church building and three new ones, designed and created by Warren Mack, Spirit of Hope’s Director of Music.
Here is a design drawing of the left side feature wall of the renovated Spirit of Hope sanctuary, showing one memorial window from the former Knox-Metropolitan United Church building in the centre, surrounded by three new, stained-glass windows. Drawing by Warren Mack
The Communion Chalice memorial stained-glass window was installed above the south-west entrance to the former Knox-Metropolitan United Church in 1982. Created by Edmonton artist, Brenda Malkinson, it measures 47 inches high by 33 inches wide (1.2 metres by .83 metre). Photo by Rick Bramm.
Warren has designed and created three smaller windows: Learning, Changing and Growing (Together), words from our Vision.

Warren has produced a video. Click here to view the video. demonstrating how he paints the glass to produce different colours, for example, yellow to orange and blue to purple. Both “plain” orange and purple coloured glass are hard to find. He also dabs stained-glass paint onto the panes to create a more interesting weathered appearance. Using a sponge that has been dabbed in almost-dry black, he carefully and selectively dabs around the edge of each piece and within the piece too to give a grainy appearance. Pieces are fired in the oven to set the paint before they are soldered together.
Our deep appreciation to Warren for sharing his passion and talent for creating such lovely and inspiring pieces of art for our renewed worship and gathering space.
